Our own Nourish-grown dahlia seed. Dahlia seed produces a wide range of colours and types of flowers. Each will be unique. They will produce tubers in their first season, which you can then save to grow your own varieties which you can name. As we grow predominantly waterlily and ball dahlias, you will have more chance of growing these types than seed collected from sources where singles are grown (although there will likely still be singles – the single gene is dominant). The photo shows some that were grown last season from Nourish seed.

Growing Notes

  • Sow in trays. Dahlia seed has naturally staggered germination times – some will germinate quicker than others.
  • As they flower you can decide whether you would like to keep them or now – remove those that you don’t want to give the ‘keepers’ more room to grow. 

Harvesting Notes

  • Harvest when about 3/4 open, before the back petals have started to look worn. Dahlias don’t keep opening much in the vase.  Cut down low so that the plant keeps produces longer stems.
