Introduction to Flower Farming

A three day intensive course to give you the fundamentals of flower growing for profit, with a mix of theory and practical. From marketing and sales, to caring for your soil, we’ll cover a wide range of topics. And yes, you’ll also get some hands on experience having fun with flowers! This is for those who are dreaming, planning, or have some experience but want to take their business to the next level.

 

TOPICS

The following will be covered in this intensive course. Please note Nourish Gardens specialises in growing annuals and short lived perennials in the field. Greenhouse/tunnelhouse growing will not be included.

-Why have a flower growing business? Big picture planning and goal setting.

-Potential flower customers, and how to grow for them

-Applying lean business principles to growing flowers

-Marketing: direct, social media

-What do the financial numbers look like? Factors to consider to build a sustainable business

-Types & varieties of flowers suitable for cutting

-Tools, equipment, infrastructure investments

-Growing practices: looking after and improving your soil

-Pest and disease management

-Harvest and post harvest techniques for maximum quality

-Making market and simple retail bouquets, including basic wrapping techniques

TO BRING

-Clothes & closed shoes suitable for the weather conditions, and that you don’t mind getting a bit of soil on. If it’s wet we may well be heading outside regardless!

-Gardening gloves (if you have your own – we will lend otherwise).

Christy Ralphs

Christy owns Nourish Gardens, a small scale flower farm and education centre on Waiheke Island.
With a background in teaching, Christy likes nothing better than to share her knowledge to help others succeed in building their own dream flower filled sustainable businesses.
Christy is a founding member of Floral Collective Aotearoa, an Auckland based wholesale flower market, and co-creator of the ‘Floral Business Activator’ coaching and mentoring programme for small scale flower growers.
